Helpful Things to Learn About

Things You Don’t Have to Know: A Guide to Living a Full Life Without All the Answers

When I first set out to make a list of things people “should” know, it was with the intention of creating a collection of must-have knowledge for a well-rounded life. After all, there are plenty of things that seem essential—practical skills, life lessons, and tips that everyone should be familiar with, right? But as I began compiling my list, something struck me: the very idea of “things you should know” might be a bit overrated.

Here’s the thing—if we only focused on the absolute essentials, the list would be surprisingly short. And that in itself is a valuable lesson. The truth is, you don’t have to know everything, or even most things, to live a fulfilling life. In fact, sometimes it’s just as important to realize what you don’t need to know. After all, no one can be an expert in everything, and trying to be can lead to unnecessary stress and overwhelm.

So instead of focusing solely on the things you “should” know, I started thinking about what truly matters. What skills or knowledge are actually useful in everyday life, and which ones are just unnecessary distractions?

What You Don’t Have to Know

Let’s start with an important idea: There are plenty of things you can go through life not knowing anything about, and that’s okay. Consider things like car maintenance or home repairs. Many people would argue that you should know something about these practical tasks—and while I understand the logic, I’ll be honest: I don’t know much about them. If something in my house breaks, I either call someone to fix it or, on occasion, simply let it stay broken. Life moves on just fine.

The truth is, we often inflate the importance of certain types of knowledge, like basic math, foreign languages, or cooking. Sure, they can be useful, but are they absolutely essential? The bar for what’s “necessary” can be pretty high, and the reality is, you can live a full and content life without being a jack-of-all-trades. It’s all about building a life around the things you do know and care about, without worrying about mastering everything else.

The Things You Should Know (But Aren’t Necessarily Essential)

So, with that in mind, let’s talk about the list that really matters. It’s not about what you should know, but about what you might find helpful in life. These are the skills and areas of knowledge that, while not mandatory, can certainly make life easier, more interesting, and more fulfilling. I’ve compiled a starting list of nine things that I think fall into this category—knowledge that’s useful, even if not absolutely essential.

1. How to Increase Your Emotional Intelligence (EI)

Emotional intelligence (EI) is arguably one of the most valuable skills you can develop. It’s the ability to recognize and manage your own emotions while understanding and responding to the emotions of others. EI is divided into four key areas:

  • Self-awareness: Knowing how your emotions impact your behavior.
  • Self-regulation: Managing your emotions in healthy ways.
  • Motivation: Using emotions to stay focused on goals.
  • Empathy: Understanding and sharing the feelings of others.

While some people are naturally more emotionally intelligent than others, this skill can be developed. Practicing active listening—really hearing what others are saying and trying to understand their perspectives—goes a long way in improving your EI. Mindfulness practices can also help, as can simply being open to learning from life’s ups and downs.

2. How to Become Financially Literate

Financial literacy is something most people could benefit from, but it’s an area that’s often overlooked. It’s a lifelong journey, and the more you understand about how money works, the better equipped you’ll be to make sound decisions about your financial future.

In today’s world, personal finance has become a booming industry, with advice coming from all corners: TikTok stars, Instagram influencers, financial gurus. But here’s the thing—much of the advice out there is generalized and often outdated, or worse, simply geared toward making money off of your confusion. Understanding the basics of budgeting, saving, investing, and managing debt is key, and it’s something everyone can work on at their own pace.

I dive deeper into the modern landscape of money in my book Gonzo Capitalism, where I talk about how to navigate the current economic system with more awareness and intention.

3. How to Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a skill that can dramatically improve your quality of life. Whether you practice meditation, yoga, or simply take moments throughout the day to pause and breathe, being mindful helps you stay grounded in the present moment, which is critical for mental well-being.

Mindfulness can reduce stress, improve focus, and foster a deeper connection to the world around you. You don’t need to be perfect at it, but incorporating small, mindful practices into your daily routine can have a profound impact over time.

4. How to Build Meaningful Relationships

At the end of the day, life is all about connection. The quality of your relationships can have a massive effect on your overall happiness and well-being. It’s important to invest time in the people who matter most to you, whether they’re family, friends, or colleagues.

Building meaningful relationships requires effort, communication, and empathy. It’s about showing up for others, being a good listener, and providing support when needed. These connections are invaluable, and nurturing them can make life feel much richer and more rewarding.

5. How to Develop a Growth Mindset

Having a growth mindset means embracing challenges, seeing failures as learning opportunities, and continuously striving to improve. It’s about believing that your abilities can be developed over time, rather than being fixed or limited. This mindset can help you approach life with more resilience, creativity, and adaptability, and it’s essential for personal and professional growth.

6. How to Communicate Effectively

Communication is at the heart of every interaction we have. Whether you’re trying to persuade someone, resolve a conflict, or simply express yourself, effective communication can make all the difference. This doesn’t just mean speaking clearly; it also involves listening actively, asking good questions, and reading between the lines.

7. How to Stay Organized and Manage Time

Time management is an invaluable skill, especially in our fast-paced world. Being able to prioritize tasks, set goals, and stay organized can help you be more productive and less stressed. Tools like planners, to-do lists, and time-blocking can help you stay on top of your responsibilities.

8. How to Embrace Change

Change is inevitable, and learning to navigate it gracefully can lead to a more fulfilling life. Whether it’s a shift in your personal life or a change in your career, the ability to embrace new circumstances, stay adaptable, and find the silver lining in challenging situations is essential for growth and resilience.

9. How to Take Care of Your Mental Health

Just as physical health requires attention, so too does your mental health. Taking time to check in with yourself, practicing self-care, and seeking professional help when needed can help you maintain a healthy mind and emotional well-being. Therapy, mindfulness, exercise, and a balanced lifestyle all contribute to mental health, and making these a priority can improve your overall quality of life.

Conclusion: Know What Matters, Forget the Rest

At the end of the day, you don’t need to know everything. What truly matters is understanding yourself, your needs, and your goals. By focusing on the skills and knowledge that truly contribute to your growth and well-being, you can build a life that’s fulfilling and meaningful. So don’t worry about trying to master everything—just focus on what matters most to you, and let the rest go.
